Letter Sound Hopscotch

Jump into Phonics Fun!

What better way to practice Phonics than to play a game of hopscotch with a fun learning twist!

Today, we take a classic game and turn it into a literacy activity that helps children practice their phonics in a fun, familiar way! Not only is this a fun way to learn Phonics and reinforce letter-sound knowledge, but it is also a great way to burn off energy.

This activity is very low-cost and can be found at any craft or dollar store in your area.

Materials needed:

- Sidewalk chalk

- An outdoor space (driveway, sidewalk, porch, and more)

How to play:

- Start off by taking your chalk and creating a hopscotch board. The difference is that you will fill the boxes with letters instead of numbers. Fill each box with letters that you want to practice.

Here is a blank board and a completed board for reference

- Have your child identify the correct letter sound for them to move up a space. For my board, the first letter is C, which means your child will have to sound out the letter by saying /C/. Once they correctly identify the sound, they can move up a space. They will continue this till they reach the end. You can also switch the game up by calling out a letter sound, such as /W/, and have your child hop till they reach the letter of the sound you called out.

You can adapt this game based on the child. If they struggle with jumping on one leg, they can simply use both, or if they are advanced in letter sounds, you can replace the letter sounds with letter blends, sight words, soft consonant sounds, and you can even transform this literacy activity into begging math facts and solving small math problems.

For children who struggle with mobility, you can modify the game so that they can drop a bean bag or ball onto the square to mark their place.

Letter sound hopscotch helps your child's reading skills evolve and even helps your kid get their body up and moving. building a healthy mind and body.
